If you ever had a childhood, you will probably remember the famous four that were the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Often shortened to their acronym TMNT, the series shows the group of personified turtles go around saving the day from random criminals. The series originally started off as a joke- a self published comic by a bunch of students for a laugh before it was picked up on by a licensing agent. By the late eighties, they were selling thousands of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ figurines and it wasn’t long before the turtles turned out to be a great hit with people.
Eventually, the series was picked up on by some lead animators that decided to make it into a brilliant cartoon for children’s television. Famous phrases such as ‘Turtle Power’ came along and most people will still remember them if nothing else. The comics continued to be published and still are and are just about as much of a hit with kids as the countless animated shows concerning the characters are. The characters are so popular, they are even seen on other merchandise such as skateboards, binders, notepads and even Pez containers for sweets. They have lunch boxes and school bags too that are a great hit with the children.
The turtles are all given famous Renaissance names as a pun, the four being called Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphaello. Splinter is their leader of sorts and acts like a father figure towards them even though he is a mutant Japanese rat that believes he is their ‘sensei’. Shredder is considered one of their biggest enemies and they fight with him constantly. Michelangelo (Mikey) is the youngest and the comic relief character in the series. Leonardo (Leo) is the oldest and wields katana, no doubt from Splinter. Donatello (Don) is the smartest and prefers to use his brain over his brawn, unlike the others most of the time. Raphaello (Raph) is a sarcastic and aggravating character who usually starts the fights. All of the turtles can be told apart from the colour masks they wear too- Blue for Leo, Orange for Mikey, Purple for Don and Red for Raph.
Even today, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are still going strong and are immensely popular, even at Christmas as they have Christmas sweaters about them and everything! Maybe, if you are still a fan, you should check that out this Christmas!
