Northern Gateway Oil Spill sweater
If Oil Spilled on a Christmas Sweater.
The motivation for this piece was the new found oil spill potential once the Northern Gateway Pipeline is run through BC.
ChristmasSweaters.ca has an awful lot of incredibly abstract sweater ideas, but this one addresses real problems we could face in the very near future with the creation of a new pipeline. It is very possible that, if this pipeline is built, we could be facing a Northern Gateway oil spill! Here are some facts about this proposed pipeline and its risks.
The proposal is that Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project would create two pipelines to carry fossil fuels from Alberta the British Columbia. One would carry gas and the other, which has caused major controversy, would carry crude oil. The plan to make these two pipelines was announced in the early 21st century, however has been postponed for many reasons, including public disapproval. It is said to be completed by the year 2015, though. Native groups say this will cause havoc for the native salmon that live in the area and could also destroy the land and water if their happens to be a disaster, such as an oil spill. Surprisingly enough, there is a huge risk behind most transportation projects of mass disaster in the reserves land; this causes damage to animals and plants there.
This sweater, however, addresses this issue controversially and clearly. The front of the sweater, which is an off white colour, says ‘Northern Gateway Oil Spill’. It is almost a premonition that this is what will occur if this proposed pipeline goes ahead. Sadly, this isn’t entirely based of circumstantial evidence, as quite a few pipelines carrying crude oil have ended in uttermost disaster in recent years. There is also a floral like pattern surrounding the writing on the front of the jumper and on the back it says clearly, ‘RIP BC,’ further addressing this possible crisis lurking behind this project.
What makes this sweater even more amazing is that it was handmade out of nothing but oil based liquid. The designer who made this sweater had the idea in mind that if an oil spill occurred, there would be nothing but oil around them, leaving it as the only possible optional method to work with. This is quite and amazing feat as there are many very small designs that must have been very hard to do by hand, let alone with runny, oil based liquids!
So, it would be worth your while, not only to check this sweater out, but to check out this proposed pipeline as well. Because, in the end, no one wants disaster to strike here.
